Rockingham Castle, Leicestershire

RMA has designed two important garden spaces within the historic Rockingham Castle grounds. We introduced a bold structure for a new garden surrounding the Victorian Rose Garden - which is the site of the original castle keep, and the main visitor attraction outside the castle. New yew hedges radiate out from the original castellated hedge that encloses the central rose garden, providing opportunities for vistas, walkways and seating within a series of character garden ‘rooms’.
We also designed a new swimming pool garden within the old, walled kitchen garden. The space has been terraced to create three levels: an upper paved area next to the new pool house for sitting and dining; a central terrace with swimming pool, lawns and generous planting beds; and a lower lawn for croquet and recreation including a new tennis court. The garden is enclosed with pleached trees and yew hedges, with glimpses out across the park. The planting comprises a simple mix of shrubs and herbaceous plants, chosen for summer colour and scent.
